White long turnips, commonly referred to as “rettiches,” are a vegetable of Asian origin belonging to the Brassicaceae family, cultivated and consumed in many European countries. In recent years, the cultivation of long white turnips has spread in the Agro Pontino area. The fruit is a white root, with a crunchy texture and a shape similar to that of a large carrot.
White long turnips have a slightly spicy but delicate flavor. They are rich in nutrients, such as vitamin C, potassium, copper, and folate. They exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, strengthen the immune system, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.
The production of “rettiches” takes place throughout the year, excluding the summer months (June, July, August), although the highest concentration of supply is expected during the cold period of the year (from November to March). Cultivation occurs both in open fields and in greenhouses. The harvest schedule includes: field productions from September to December; greenhouse productions from January to March; field productions from April to May.
The crop cycle varies depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and photoperiod. The maturation cycle is about 40/60 days for spring and summer sowings and about 90/100 days for autumn and winter sowings. The cultivation area covers 40 hectares, including 15 in greenhouses and 25 in open fields.
Long turnips are individually harvested in the field and transferred, without leaves, to bins at the processing center where sorting and washing take place. Depending on the size, they are categorized as small, medium, extra, or bundled if sold with leaves. Packaging involves the use of disposable wooden crates or reusable plastic crates.
The product is primarily marketed abroad, with sales at major markets and retail chains. Transportation is carried out by land through specialized transport companies.
